MY ALARM pulled me from sleep. I ignored it in favor of cuddling against the warmth that seemed to encase me. It was a nice warmth that smelled of a faint musky woods scent and had a reassuring heartbeat.

“I am presuming that appalling sound is your alarm,” a deep rumbly voice beneath my cheek said.

“Ugh” was the only coherent sound I could get out.

Hang on a second. I raised my head to get a good look at my comfortable, warm mattress and realized that I was lying half on top of Aemon, with my head on his chest and my legs entwined with his. I blinked in astonishment, positive I was still sleeping.

“Good morning. You fell asleep, and it seemed inappropriate to disturb your slumber.”

“So you decided to sleep with me?” I rubbed my face on his shirt.

“I assure you, it was just sleep.”

“I’m aware of that.”

“Really? Please enlighten me as to how.”

“I’m still wearing my socks. I would hope that if we do have sex, I at least take off my socks.” I am also quite frank in the morning, as opposed to the rest of the day.

“Did you know that your eyes are a fascinating shade of amber in the morning?”

Maybe I wasn’t the only one a bit more honest than usual in the early hours. Before I could swoon into a puddle of mush, Aemon sat up abruptly, causing me to be dumped rather unceremoniously onto the couch.

“Right. So I must be on my way. I’m already rather tardy for work.”

“Dude, it’s only 6:30 a.m. Who goes to work that early?” I groaned into the futon mattress.

“Those who wish to succeed. After all the early bird—”

“If you finish that sentence, I will smack you with a pillow.” I ignored the exasperated huff and burrowed deeper into the futon.

Turning my head to face him, I couldn’t help but marvel at how put together he was for someone that spent the night on a couch. “Thank you for the decorations and the tree stand.”

Aemon crouched beside the futon, studying my face. “No, thank you, Charlie, for one of the most enjoyable nights I have had in quite some time.”

The gold flecks in his eyes fascinated me. “You never really answered my question. Why did you come back? Why did you do all of this?” I waved my hand in the direction of the fully decorated tree and the TV, which showed a menu of Christmas movies.

He leaned forward and brushed his lips gently against the corner of my mouth. “Because, Charlie Jones, in all of my life, I don’t believe I have met another individual quite like you. You defended a wretched beast without a single hesitation. Not only did you take the ragged creature in, you also gave it Christmas when most would not even give it a crust of bread. You astonish me.”

“I wouldn’t call you a wretched beast. You seem like a decent fellow to me.”

Aemon’s bark of laughter caught me by surprise, and my breath caught in my throat.
